Here is the paradox of portrait photography: your aim is to capture the essence of a person but instead of removing barriers, you keep camera and lens firmly between you and the sitter. And yet, there’s a special breed of photographers that seem to use this paradox to their advantage. Sadly I’m not one of them, but that means my rare successes in this area taste that much sweeter.
